Of course we had to stop at Churchill Downs. And of course they had to charge way too much for a tour of the place. We visited the gift shop. They'll let you in there for free. And when it's 100+ outside, you'll go anywhere with a bit of air conditioning.
Josie loved the horse racing video and got a bit to aggressive hitting the screen.
If you know anything about the Hewards, you know we like to eat. So our next stop was to get a Hot Brown Sandwich and a Derby Pie. Apparently that's the real Kentucky food. Not fried chicken, despite popular belief. The kind tour guide suggested Lynn's Paradise Cafe and she didn't even charge us for her advice!
The cafe was spectacular. Every vintage loving soul would be in heaven. It had the right amount of kitschy quirkiness. It was the perfect amount of gaggy cuteness. AND the food was good. I dream of owning a bakeshop with just as much personality one day.
That's the hot brown! It is a piece of sourdough bread, turkey and ham, smothered in mounds of cheese and creamy gravy and topped with a bit of bacon. It's all melty and ooey gooey. Mmmmmmmmm.
Their vinyl tablecloths were the perfect for Jos. The table had a little jar of play animals and she had to growl at each one. A friendly growl, of course.
The rest of the trip can be summed up in one word.... sweaty.
We visited the Ohio River, the Louisville Slugger Museum (gift shop!), and meandered aimlessly around downtown Louisville. It was ridiculously humid.
We had to finish with a cool treat. Popsicles hit the spot as we drove our dear friends to the airport.
Connie, Steve, and Sofi - we miss you dearly! We will be forever grateful to you for joining us on this adventure. What great memories we had! We look forward to seeing you out here again!
And to everyone else... look how much fun you can have in Kentucky! Come! Today! Or maybe wait until the heat wave passes....
Oh shoot! I was really looking forward to some REAL Kentucky Fried Chicken!!
ReplyDeleteI second the motion... When we come we want some chicken, not that crazy sammich. :)
ReplyDeleteI have yet to find a good fried chicken place. There are a few restaurants around that claim to make it, but they all look a little sketchy. But those are sometimes the best restaurants, so maybe we ought to try 'em. Not today... I already ate a huge brownie. I don't think I can handle fried chicken too.
